He did have it bad. Nervous and unsure, Kirk pulled up to the railing beside Rosemary, needing to talk to her, wanting to be with her, and all the while thinking fifty years was a long time to stay with one person. Then she looked up at him with that endearing, innocent, hesitant smile and he realized fifty years might not be nearly long enough to spend with her.

As if sensing his doubts, Rosemary tried to smooth things over. “Aunt Fitz prides herself on her matchmaking skills. No wonder she’s always making a new quilt for yet another wedding.”

Kirk relaxed a little at her pragmatic observation. “Poor Samuel. The man probably stayed on a very tight leash.”

Frowning, Rosemary replied, “Not a leash, Kirk. More like a tight bond, a connection that joined them together. He wanted to be with her. And he was so attached to her, so very caring and solicitous of her feelings. They were a special couple.”

He sighed, then stepped closer. “I meant no disrespect. Actually, I’m in awe of the whole thing. And it’s made me take a good, hard look at my own philosophy on life.”

Taking this opportunity to find out more and get her mind off her own failure as a bride, Rosemary asked, “And just what is your philosophy on life?”

He snorted. “Just that. Just a philosophy, never applied. Up until now, my whole attitude was one of shallowness and a definite stance against any form of commitment other than my work, at least according to my dear mother.”

Intrigued, she said, “And…was your mother right?”

“I’m afraid so.” His gaze moved over her features. “But I’m working hard on changing all of that. You talked about how I’d given you hope, remember?”

She remembered. Nodding, she matched his gaze with one of her own, her breath holding against her ribs as she waited for his next words.

“Well, Rosemary, you’ve given me something I’d neglected to nurture in my solitary existence.”

“Oh, and what’s that?”

“You’ve given me back my faith, and my ability to trust in God’s plan for my life.”

Surprised, she frowned. “But your faith seems so solid to me.”

He touched a hand to her hair. “Oh, it’s solid. But it was much like your precious church building. Built on a firm base, built to last, but it needed rejuvenating.”

Touching her nose with a finger, he added, “I guess I needed to see that life isn’t an easy road. Before, I could simply pack up and move on. Now I’m starting to realize that in order to be strong in our faith, sometimes we have to face tough obstacles. I teased you about being afraid of heights. Well, I’m just as afraid, but it’s a different kind of fear.”

“So even though you’re able to leap tall buildings, you’re unable to take a leap of faith?”

“Exactly. Or I was before. That’s changed now, though. Because of Reverend Clancy, and Aunt Fitz, but mostly because of you, I’m beginning to see that in order to win what we want, in order to achieve our goals, we have to depend on a source beyond our control.
